Chest Tonic, with thyme + kawakawa
Made in Dunedin, harvested in Otago
Chest Tonic is made from thyme harvested in Central Otago, and kawakawa from Pokaka, a small settlement at the foothills of Mount Ruapehu; wrapped in a symphony of other potent herbs, to create an essential daily tonic for asthmatics, those with a 'chest weakness' or people struggling with the changes in season.
Central Otago thyme has long been utilised for its powerful medicinal qualities. The climate range from extremely hot summers to frosty cold winters makes the thyme that grows there incredibly strong and the active constituent within it (thymol) super potent and effective. Effectively the plant thyme, needs its own immune system and that is the production of this constituent thymol.
Thymol is a powerful deterrent to other invading plants, bacteria, viruses or fungi, and by harvesting this plant. humans are also able to benefit from it’s ‘immunity and protection’. Thymol is both antibacterial, antiviral and has been used traditionally for years in Europe in order to help with winter ills and chills, bronchitis, coughs, sore throats and runny noses, as well as helping to act as a spasmolytic and expectorant.
Another health benefit of thyme: it's a good source of copper, fiber, iron, and manganese.
Kawakawa is a native herbaceous shrub with greeen heart-shaped leaves and knobbly joints, plentifully growing in the New Zealand bush. Kawakawa is almost an entire plant pharmacy in itself, with a variety of active constituents that make it a complex and powerful medicine, particularly for reducing inflammation and irritation. The plant works as a circulation stimulant and as an expectorant (useful for clearing lungs when you have coughs and/or colds). As an anti-microbial herb, Kawakawa helps kill bugs, making it a wonderful aid for treating any infections
"The great virtue contained in the leaves and succulent shoots of the kawakawa shrub is quite sufficient in itself to deal with the most serious bruises and abrasions. A jug or basinful of these leaves steeped with boiling water, and the mixture applied rather hot to the bruise, has great curative powers." W Skinner. "Pioneer Medical Men of Taranaki, 1933"
